Breaking Taboos of Sex

We all know that sex is a taboo thing especially here in the US. In my post about why sex shouldn't be taboo, we covered why it shouldn't, and here we are breaking taboos. Sex is natural and it's not a bad thing. Working in a sex shop has shown me that sex is like food everyone has preferences but that doesn't mean we can't talk about it.

My 3 Criteria

Working in a sex shop has brought about some topics that I am not into, and possibly don't understand. This doesn't mean that it is a weird question because I don't think that is a thing. As long as all three of the following are met we can have a conversation. Everything must be human, everyone must be over 18 and everything must be consensual.  For instance, personally don't enjoy feet but that doesn't mean that someone who loves them is wrong.  Just because you don't agree or like it doesn't mean it's wrong or bad! As long as everyone involved is able to give consent then let's talk about it. By no means am I saying that you must share intimate details with everyone? However, I am saying that talking about it is not a bad thing or something to be ashamed of.

Breaking Taboos

There are no weird questions! At least 3 times a week someone comes in and says "this may be a weird question" NO question is out of limits as long as it meets the criteria we just covered. So were do you start? Find a friend or sex educator/ sex coach who you trust. Open and honest communication is key to any relationship whether romantic, professional, or friendship. Know that like most things in life you are not alone! The only way to normalize sex and break the taboos is to talk about it and change.

Seek out someone who knows more than you about the subject you want to know more about. For instance, if you want to know more about cooking you go to a kitchen store or watch shows on cooking.  Unfortunately, if you want to know about sex there aren't many shows like Sue Johanson these days. Going to a boutique or pleasure focused sex shop most of the time there will be knowledgeable staff to ease any worry or discomfort you may feel about the subject. That is from my experience going to and working at a sex shop.

Sex is human nature and normal. It should not be something that is taboo. Find people you trust and talk to them about it. Normalizing it is the best way to breaking taboos. With all things in life, growth can't happen in your comfort zone. By that I mean at first, it may be a bit out of your comfort zone and that's okay we all start somewhere. So here's to breaking taboos! Stay healthy, stay positive, and don't be an asshole.
