Dealing with Anxiety

Mental health quote

Anxiety seems like it's the thing that knits all of us millennials together. It is a cruel thing to deal with and it's unfortunate. One of my favorite quotes is " Your mental health isn't your fault but they are your responsibility" by Unknown. Everyone is going to deal with it a bit differently. This post will be how I have dealt with it.

Keeping Calm

Over the years I have put some measures in place to try and keep my anxiety in control as silly as that sounds. One of the main things I use to help with my anxiety is self-care. Having written a whole post about my self-care I will mainly say that bathes are my go-to way to relax and ground myself. Other things that help are writing. Whether that is blogging or writing poetry. Poetry really helps me get my emotions and thoughts straight. Be it that I am an emotional person it is important to me that I feel what I need to move past them in a healthy way. Along with writing reading also gives me a healthy outlet. Finding a passion outlet has been a huge game-changer for me.

During Anxiety

Trying to prevent overwhelming anxiety is one thing. Calming down during episodes of anxiety is much harder than trying to prevent it. Again everyone is going to be different and you need to find what works for you. Focusing on one specific object. Finding something steady and that doesn't move or change. For instance in a living room the couch arm, a picture on the wall, or even a lamp. After I have my focus point tapping is a way that helps ground me further. Typically I like things that use my hands like tapping my wrist or playing with my rings to keep it small and easily accessible.

Anxiety can be tough but letting it take over your life is harder; at least of me. I have read books and blog posts as well as seen a professional for help. There is no shame in seeking help be it self help or professional. Please reach out to someone if you need help. Never the less stay healthy, stay positive, and don't be an asshole.
